Core Connections: Serving Patrons with Print and Other Disabilities
Many libraries throughout the Commonwealth are designated access centers and offer special assistive aids and technology, such as screen readers, assistive listening systems, mobility devices, and speech recognition software. But has your library taken this conversation beyond technology and tools?
Join staff from the Perkins Library for a discussion on "Libraries Beyond Accessibility: Serving Patrons with Print and Other Disabilities." Walk away with practical strategies for:
- Partnering with disability advocates and rehab services
- Integrating National Library Service resources into mainstream library systems
- Exploring universal design for both digital and physical spaces
Kim Charlson is the Executive Director of the Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library. Kim has been involved with Perkins Library since 1985, overseeing the library’s mission of providing accessible reading material to people who are blind; have low vision; or have physical or reading disabilities. Erin Fragola is the Outreach Manager at Perkins Library in Watertown, the Regional NLS Library providing accessible resources for people living in Massachusetts who have print disabilities as well as the institutions that serve them.
