Digital Accessibility: HTML Structure vs Style

HTML provides the basic building blocks for a large portion of content on the web.

It has evolved over the last 30 years to provide a rich set of tags that allow content creators to mark up documents and communicate to browsers and other software what the purpose of that bit of information is - a paragraph, a table, a button.  And the software responded by displaying those elements with a particular look and feel.

In the early days, web developers also discovered they could use HTML to force a visual layout on a page, by taking advantage of how browsers would interpret a particular tag. Even after better ways to control layout and style arrived, this persisted.

But for accessibility, the answer is clear: it's time to return to basics and use HTML to define what the content is, not control how it looks.

In this webinar we will:

  • look at the HTML tags that help you define the structure of the documents on the web,
  • talk about common pitfalls and shortcuts that should be avoided
  • discuss alternative some alternative methods of controlling layout
  • ways to see the underlying structure of your document
